Developing Web Design Using Cascading Style Sheets

Have you wondered what all the talk regarding Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is about? Have you wanted to redesign your web site to go from the use of tables to cascading style sheets but were afraid it would cause more problems? This one day course will help to inform and expose you to basic CSS concepts. Hands-on activities will include building a replica of the UIUC template page from scratch using only CSS for positioning and styling. We'll also learn basic best practice techniques to give you a good solid foundation for your web development efforts. 

Prerequisite: Familiarity with HTML. Basic knowledge of CSS is helpful but not required.

Updating Your SQL Server 2005 Skills to SQL Server 2008

With the release of SQL Server 2008 just around the corner it’s time to take a look at its new features. In this one-day hands-on workshop you will take a self-guided tour of the manageability, governance, performance, security and development enhancements of the SQL Server 2008 engine. Students will be free to pick and choose from among nine modules provided to select the topics of most interest to them. In addition to the core engine, enhancements to Data Warehousing, Reporting Services and Analysis Services will also be covered.

Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with Transact-SQL

This one-day course provides an introduction to the MS Transact-SQL query language and detailed, hands-on experience writing SELECT queries. This course should be attended by those who are in a position to write or understand / modify existing SELECT queries. We will use MS SQL Server 2005, but the concepts apply to all relational databases. Attendees will learn about the structure of the Transact-SQL query language; the ways that queries may be issued to MS SQL Server; how to write and troubleshoot SELECT queries; how to work with date, time and string character data formats; how to group data and perform statistical summarizations; how to construct sub-queries to break down complex queries; and how to use standard table joins to retrieve data from multiple tables.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with MS Windows OS; basic familiarity with relational db concepts (tables, relationships).

Maintaining a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database

This course is intended for IT professionals who want to become skilled on SQL Server 2005 features and technologies for maintaining a database. It is the first half of the Microsoft Official Curriculum course 2780. At completion of this course, students will be able to install and configure SQL Server 2005, manage database files, backup and restore databases, manage security, and monitor SQL Server.

Implementing a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database

This three-day instructor-led course focuses on teaching individuals how to use SQL Server 2005 product features and tools related to implementing a database. Topics covered will include learning how to create databases and database files; create data types and tables; use XML-related features in Microsoft SQL Server 2005; plan, create, and optimize indexes; implement data integrity in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 databases by using constraints, triggers, and XML schemas; implement views; implement stored procedures and functions; implement managed code in the database; and use Service Broker to build a messaging-based solution.

Implementing and Maintaining Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services

This three-day instructor-led course teaches students how to implement a Reporting Services solution in an organization. The course discusses how to use the Reporting Services development tools to create reports, and how to use the Reporting Services management and administrative tools to manage a Reporting Services solution. Topics covered will include learning how to describe SQL Server Reporting Services and its components; create a Reporting Services report; enhance a Reporting Services report; create and manipulate data sets; use report models to implement reporting for business users; configure report publishing and execution settings; implement subscriptions for reports; administer Reporting Services; and implement custom Reporting Services applications.

This three-day course teaches students how to implement an Integration Services solution by discussing how to develop, deploy, and manage Integration Services packages. Troubleshooting and Optimizing Database Servers Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005

This two-day workshop will teach database administrators working in enterprise environments how to determine and troubleshoot performance issues using Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The primary focus of this workshop is to teach the overall process of troubleshooting. It includes establishing monitoring standards and baselines, determining performance thresholds, and focusing the investigation on specific issues.

Updating your Active Directory Technology Skills to Windows Server 2008

This instructor-led course provides students with an understanding of Active Directory technology in Windows Server 2008 (based on an interim build of Windows Server 2008). After completing this course, attendees will be able to describe and configure server roles with Active Directory Services in Windows Server 2008; plan for and deploy Active Directory Domain Services; install, configure, and manage the Server Core role as a domain controller; manage accounts, subnets, Site-Links, Group Policy, and DNS configuration with Active Directory Domain Services; manage new Active Directory services, including Active Directory Federation Services, Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services, and Active Directory Rights Management Services; set up and manage Read-Only Domain Controllers (RODC); use auditing features in Active Directory Domain Services; and manage credentials with Active Directory Certificate Services, including Credential Roaming.

Implementing Group Policy in the UIUC Active Directory

Group Policy provides directory-based desktop configuration management. In the UIUC Active Directory, you can use Group Policy to define configurations for groups of users and computers. With Group Policy, you will be able to specify settings for registry-based policies, security, software installation, scripts, folder redirection, remote installation services, and Internet Explorer maintenance. This 12-hour workshop is designed for UIUC Active Directory OU administrators.

Implementing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

This two-day instructor-led course provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully implement Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) version 3.0 in their organizations. Attendees will learn the importance of thinking about the architecture of their entire environment, including business and application needs, during the planning and deployment phases. The course covers how to perform a clean installation of WSS 3.0 and also describes all the prerequisites required to select the most appropriate method for upgrading WSS from 2.0 to 3.0 in a specific scenario. In addition, the course focuses on how to manage WSS after it is configured.

Deploying Microsoft Windows Vista Business Desktops

This instructor-led hands-on course provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully deploy Microsoft® Windows Vista™ business desktops throughout their organization. Students are introduced to the deployment life cycle, which consists of planning for the deployment, building and customizing the deployment method, and then implementing the actual deployment.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges, techniques, and processes that take place throughout the Microsoft Windows Vista desktop deployment life-cycle.
  • Inventory, analyze, and mitigate application compatibility when planning a Microsoft Windows Vista desktop deployment.
  • Capture and restore user state information during a workstation deployment task.
  • Create a custom image of a desktop computer that runs the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.
  • Deploy a Microsoft Windows Vista image using a Lite Touch methodology.
  • Secure a desktop running Microsoft Windows Vista using Windows Vista technology.


Prerequisites: Before attending this course, students must have:

  • Experience deploying Windows® client systems.
  • At least one year of experience managing a Microsoft Windows desktop operating system environment.
  • Familiarity with standard client and application deployment methods such as Group Policy, disk imaging, and Systems Management Server (SMS).

Fundamentals of Network Security

This four-day, instructor-led course, designed for administrators who are responsible for the day-to-day administration of Microsoft Windows® systems, provides attendees with the knowledge and skills to begin supporting network security within an organization. Students who complete this course will be able to identify security threats and vulnerabilities, and help respond to and recover from security incidents. Although the course focuses on Microsoft product- and technology-specific implementation of security concepts, many of these same concepts can be applied to other technologies.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain common attacks against network assets, the associated threats and vulnerabilities, and what network security personnel do to secure assets.
  • Explain how to use cryptography to help protect information and how to choose an appropriate encryption method for an organization.
  • Implement security-enhanced computing baselines in an organization.
  • Help protect information in an organization by using authentication and access control.
  • Deploy and manage certificates.
  • Help protect transmission of data by identifying threats to network devices and implementing security for common data transmission, remote access, and wireless network traffic.
  • Help protect Web servers against common attacks and configure security for Web browsers.
  • Help protect e-mail messages and instant messaging from common security threats.
  • Identify common security threats and vulnerabilities to directory services and DNS, and then apply security methods to help protect them.
  • Identify network perimeter threats and monitor perimeter security for a network.
  • Identify types of security policies to manage operational security, and then use these policies to ensure compliance by users in an organization.
  • Preserve business continuity by implementing a security-enhanced disaster recovery strategy, communicating risks to others, and performing secure backup and recovery.
  • Identify, respond to, and assist in the formal investigation of security incidents.

Prerequisite: should have general knowledge of networking concepts and one or more years of experience managing Windows computers. Other IT professionals may also take this course on the path to becoming a security specialist.
